FAQ
Questions I get asked often enough to warrant a page.
Are you an architect?
No. I am a writer. I have no professional training in architecture and no affiliation with any firm, institution, or publication. I write about buildings because I find them interesting, not because it is my profession.
Why do you focus on Florida?
Because I live here, and because Florida is an extreme case of almost everything that has happened to American cities in the last seventy years. Writing about Florida architecture is a way of writing about American architecture in concentrated form.
Why do you write about Brutalism so much?
Because it is the most misunderstood style in American architectural history, and because the buildings are being demolished faster than they are being recognized as significant. I am not a Brutalism partisan — I think some Brutalist buildings are bad buildings — but I think the wholesale dismissal of the style is a mistake.
Can I use your writing for research or education?
Yes, with attribution. If you are quoting or citing my work in an academic context, please use standard citation format. If you are using it for educational purposes, please let me know — I am always interested to hear how the work is being used.
Do you accept guest posts or contributions?
Not at present. This site publishes only my own writing.
How can I contact you?
